You fall in love with it all too quickly and wish for a whole sea of flowers. No wonder, the Turkish poppy is really intoxicating with its bright red, white or aubergine-red flowers, depending on the variety. Which propagation methods have become established?

Turkish poppies are best propagated by sowing

Target the sowing

Targeted sowing is the most obvious. You can harvest the seeds yourself or buy them naturally. Each capsule contains numerous, extremely fine seeds. They are ripe after the flowering in June/July is over, around August. They are harvested when they are dry and the seeds inside are rustling.

Sowing works like this:

  • No-till is preferable
  • between April and June
  • Do not cover seeds or cover them completely flat with soil (light germinators)
  • Keep substrate moist
  • Germination time: 2 to 3 weeks

Prevent or promote self-seeding?

You do not necessarily have to intervene directly in the sowing. The Turkish poppy likes to multiply by itself if you give it the opportunity to do so, i.e. if its withered flowers are not cut off. The seeds are blown out on the capsules when ripe and blown away.

Divide the perennial

Another method of propagation is division. Do this in the spring! Dividing this perennial perennial is recommended every three years. This partially prevents it from multiplying uncontrollably.

The clumps are dug up and divided with a knife or spade. Choose a sunny spot in a warm location for the sections. The soil there should be loose and well-drained. Now all that's left to do is plant!

Use root cuttings to propagate

The last method is obtaining root cuttings. This is important:

  • perform in winter
  • Dig up the roots first
  • Cut off roots near the root collar
  • Cut pieces 8 cm long
  • Cut the lower part of the roots at an angle
  • first plant in the cold frame until newly sprouted
  • cool place and moist soil are significant
  • Buds after 4 to 6 weeks

tips

If you do not want the oriental poppy to spread, cut off the faded flowers and divide regularly. It also spreads by itself over the years through its roots.
