Wild-growing checkered flowers have become rare in our latitudes and the fragile lily plant with the unusually colored flowers is also a rarity in gardens. Chess flowers do not necessarily have to be cared for in the bed, they can also be cultivated well in pots and enchant the room in spring with their unusual flowers.

The right location
Outdoors, the checkerboard flower thrives in moist, sunny meadows. Accordingly, you should also give the beauty a bright location on the windowsill. On the other hand, the checkered flower is less fond of drafts and heat radiating from the heating.
The right substrate
Unless you buy plants that have already been grown in the nursery, you will have to let the small bulbs sprout yourself. Since the bulbs of the chess flower are very sensitive, you should plant the bulbs you have bought as soon as possible.
Conventional potting soil is ideal for flowering plants that you fill in a flower pot. Alternatively, you can use the substrate from the components:
- topsoil
- peat
- bark humus
- sand
Mix it yourself at low cost.
The planter
Since the checkered flower needs a lot of moisture, but at the same time is very sensitive to waterlogging, you should choose the planter carefully. It must have enough drainage holes that you cover with potsherds. This allows the substrate to store moisture well while allowing excess water to drain.
The chess flower loves it moist
The checkerboard flower is a bog plant and must be kept evenly moist. Waterlogging, on the other hand, must be avoided at all costs, since the bulbs that are permanently in the water quickly begin to rot. So please throw away any standing water in the saucer immediately.
Fertilize
Supply the chess flower with commercially available bloom fertilizer every fourteen days during the growth period.
repot
You should repot the chess flower every two to three years. Carefully remove the onion from the old container and place it in fresh substrate. With good care, the mother plant has multiplied itself with many small onions. Separate them carefully and add the onions as well.
tips
Even during the resting phase in the summer months, you must keep the checkered flower evenly moist. Water whenever the top inches of the substrate feel dry.
