The plant, often succinctly referred to as "heather", is actually not a single plant species, instead various genera and varieties are brought together under this generic term. The actual heather (Erica) belongs to the heather family and is often cultivated in this country as winter or snow heather. The closely related common heather (Calluna vulgaris) is also known under the name "heather" and is often sold as "calluna" or "summer heather". In terms of their needs, however, the different species are very similar, which is why they are dealt with together here.

Which location does the heather prefer?
Heather blooms most luxuriantly in full sun, but also thrives very well in light partial shade. Only shady places are to be avoided.
What characteristics should the ideal floor have?
Although the fairly undemanding heather will grow and flower in almost any soil, it does best in slightly acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5. In addition, the soil should be loose, well moistened, rich in nutrients and humus. Soil that is too heavy can be loosened up with sand and peat soil.
When is the best time to plant heather?
In principle, container plants can be planted at almost any time of the year. However, the spring between March and May and the autumn months from September to November have proven to be most suitable for heather plants.
How far apart should the heather be planted?
Since heather needs a lot of light, the individual plants should not be planted too densely. Place the plants in the borders at least 20 centimeters apart.
When does the heather bloom?
Usually, heather is divided into winter and summer flowering varieties in specialist shops. For example, the common heather that blooms in late summer shows its white, pink or purple hues between August and September, while the winter heather has its main flowering period between December and April. The non-hardy tree heather (Erica arborea) shows its white flowers from February to July.
How to propagate the heather?
Heather can be propagated wonderfully by sinkers or seedlings.
Can the heather also be cultivated in pots?
Yes, many heather varieties are very popular, especially as autumn and winter plants on balconies and terraces.
tips
It is best to plant the heather together with plant species that have similar requirements in terms of location and care. These include blueberries, cranberries, rhododendrons, juniper, various grasses (e.g. purple moor grass or blue fescue) and heather varieties that bloom in different colors.
