Hostas are suitable for planting in tubs as well as for the open ground. They are mainly ornamental leaf perennials. But its lavender-colored flowers and its function as a ground cover should not be underestimated either. How are they properly planted?

Hostas can be planted both in tubs and outdoors

Which location is suitable for a hosta?

Hostas like shady to moderately semi-shady locations best. Most species and varieties do not tolerate sun. If they stand in the sun, the color of their leaves fades and the former forest plant dries up quickly.

You are welcome to use hostas to underplant trees. Shade beds, areas behind the gazebo or north sides in general are also suitable for these perennials. Be careful not to plant more than three hostas per square meter!

What requirements do hostas place on the soil?

Before you put the hostas in the soil, note that it should later be mulched and ideally have the following characteristics when planting and in the long term:

  • loamy
  • permeable
  • nutritious
  • rich in humus
  • not over-fertilized
  • wet

When is the best time to plant and when do hostas bloom?

Spring between February and March is a good time to plant hostas. They only sprout in April. Alternatively, early autumn is a good time. Hostas usually flower in June.

How do you start propagation?

Hostas are very easy to multiply. All you need is a spade. Dig up the hosta in spring or autumn. Divide them with a spade and plant the newly acquired specimen in a different location. The sowing is much more complex.

Which plant neighbors are suitable?

The easy-care hostas look good both individually and in groups. But they also look great next to other perennials. The following selection shows which plant neighbors are suitable for the presence of hostas:

  • silver candles
  • heart flowers
  • gemseed
  • Rhododendrons
  • ferns
  • Japan mountain grass

tips

A few hosta varieties even tolerate sunshine. Basically, you can remember that all blue-leaved varieties should not be planted in the sun, as they turn green there.
