Szilla is either not found at all or mostly found in large populations. It is recognized when it is in bloom thanks to its characteristically blue colored starry flowers. But when does the heyday begin and end?

Most species flower from March to April

Most of the species of mildly poisonous squill that are commercially available flower from March and into April. Szilla peruviana is an exception, blooming in wintertime. The autumn squill does not bloom in spring either, but only in August and until October.

Here are more interesting facts about the flower of the squill:

  • the plant flowers best in semi-shade
  • coveted bee pasture
  • Recommendation: Cut off the flower stalks immediately below after they have faded
  • self-sowing after flowering

If you decide to prune the flower stalks after they have faded, remember not to remove the leaves! The onion feeds on them until summer.
