- Other maintenance errors can be:
- Shoot tips turn red or fall off in autumn
If cypresses suddenly get brown spots or the shoot tips dry up and die, caution is advised. There may be an illness. Sometimes pest infestation is to blame. In most cases, however, it is a matter of maintenance errors.

disease or pest infestation
False cypresses can get brown spots due to fungi or pest infestation. In the case of fungal diseases, the shoot tips die off, in the case of pest infestation you will find signs of damage and sometimes completely hollow branches.
Cut off the affected parts of the plant generously.
If the infestation is very severe, there is often no choice but to dispose of the cypress and replace it with a healthy specimen.
Brown spots in unfavorable locations
If the cypress is not cared for properly or grows in a bad location, it can also turn brown. If the location is too shady and the soil too moist, the plant will react with brown spots.
Other maintenance errors can be:
- Root ball has dried up
- waterlogging in the soil
- insufficient nutrients in the soil
- too much fertilizer
- Cut in the scrap wood
- Plant got frost
Make sure that the root ball is always slightly damp, but never completely wet.
Fertilize regularly with organic fertilizer. But don't overdo it. Mulch under the false cypresses have proven to be very favourable. They prevent the soil from drying out and regularly supply the plants with new nutrients.
Never cut into scrap wood. At these points, the cypress no longer sprout, but turns brown.
Shoot tips turn red or fall off in autumn
If the shoot tips turn reddish, this is not so dangerous. The cypress simply got too much direct sun. This can happen in hot summers.
Simply cut off the affected shoots. The plant quickly recovers from this.
Even if the cypress suddenly loses shoot tips in autumn, this is not a concern, but a completely natural process.
tips
False cypresses tolerate neither road salt in winter nor urine from dogs and other animals. Therefore, do not plant the ornamental trees too close to roads. You should keep animals away from the garden anyway because of the toxicity of the plants.
