When it gets warmer outside and greenery and spits are everywhere, the new gardening season that many have been longing for begins. Gardening is particularly important in spring, because this is the time of year when you lay the foundation for a blooming garden year. In the following article you will find out which work you must not forget and how you can easily do it.

Garden tools waiting

If you have simply stowed away your shovel, pickaxe and rake in autumn, you should first pay a little attention to this equipment:

  • Sharpen spades and scissors and oil them.
  • Check all stems. Replace ailing handles.
  • Thoroughly clean the utensils you need, such as seed pots and flower bowls.
  • Check the functionality of electrical devices. Send them in for repairs if necessary.

Spring treatment for the lawn

To ensure that the grass grows back strong and lush green, you must first rake off all the remains of leaves. Then get to grips with bare and moss-covered areas:

  • Scarify the area. In this way, the ground is scored about 2 millimeters deep and the lawn thatch is worked out. More oxygen reaches the roots, the grass grows denser and the lawn becomes more durable.
  • When the stalks have reached a height of around 7 millimeters, you can mow for the first time. Shorten the lawn to about half a centimeter.
  • The growth is then supported by applying a lawn fertilizer.

Prepare beds for spring

To ensure that flowering plants sprout vigorously, cut off the stems that remain as winter protection in the spring. Also remove old foliage, under which the fresh shoots could rot.

Unattractive gaps in the bed are particularly noticeable in spring. Now fill them with new perennials. You can find lots of great tips for harmonious, low-maintenance bed planting in the garden guide from Aldi Süd.

fertilization with compost

Loosen up the soil between the plants and work in compost. This natural fertilizer cares for the soil, while at the same time valuable nutrients are supplied to the plants. If necessary, you can also apply a little special fertilizer.

The first sowing

In the cold frame or greenhouse, you can grow annual summer flowers and vegetables in early spring.

In sheltered locations, with a warming fleece cover, you can sow hardy vegetables such as lettuce, early carrots, beans, radishes or onions directly into the bed as early as March/April.

Cut back trees and shrubs

Fruit trees and evergreen bushes are trimmed in spring. Don't just cut around the outside until you like the shape, but keep removing old twigs from the middle down to the bottom.

tips

The best time to cut roses in spring is when the forsythia is in bloom. Shorten frozen, diseased and damaged shoots at a slight angle five millimeters above a bud.
