What fun to play football with the kids in the garden. So that the lawn does not go limp, it should be professionally laid out and cared for. We reveal how the plan succeeds in stadium quality.

Preparing the seedbed - this is how you do it right

To ensure that a football turf survives counterattacks and straddle attacks, you set the course with professional preparation of the ground. Choose a dry day between April and June for the following work, because this is the time when the climatic conditions are ideal for laying a football turf. Here's how to set an example:

  • Remove any remaining lawn with a lawn peeler
  • Till the soil or dig 1-2 spades deep
  • Remove all weeds, roots, rhizomes and stones meticulously
  • First rake the area roughly and then work it into fine crumbs

In order to get the lawn seeds ready to germinate, experienced hobby gardeners work mature compost and horn meal into the top layer of soil. Then sprinkle the surface and let it rest for 14 days.

Sowing soccer turf - this is how it works with skill

After the subsoil has settled, the clod is ready to receive the tender lawn seeds. Now the soil gets its finishing touches by weeding again and creating a crumbly fine level. You distribute the seed with the help of a spreader. Then use the rake to gently work in the light germs and compact the seedbed with a roller.

In the subsequent period, the freshly sown football turf must not dry out at any time in order not to endanger the germination of the seeds. Depending on the variety, you can look forward to the first seedlings within 8 to 21 days.

Fitness training for soccer turf - this care is what counts

Before you go hunting for goals with your children on your own soccer turf, the green is brought into top shape. When the stalks have reached a growth height of 10 centimetres, they receive the first cut. Mow a maximum of one third of the grass tips. The following care measures keep the soccer turf fit:

  • Fertilize the new lawn regularly from the start
  • Mow weekly from April to September/October, no shorter than 3-4 centimetres
  • In summer droughts, irrigate thoroughly repeatedly
  • Do not walk on the soccer turf before mowing and never water under direct sunlight

At the end of summer and the beginning of the new outdoor season, a stressed, moss-covered lawn requires special care. They breathe new life into the green by scarifying, aerating, sanding and fertilizing it. If a pH value test reveals a result below 5.5, you can compensate for the shortcoming with lawn lime in no time at all.

tips and tricks

Choosing a suitable seed creates the best conditions for a hard-wearing football turf. The Research Society for Landscape Development and Landscaping e.V. took a close look and found the ideal mix. Look for an offering that is 60 percent meadow grass (Poa pratensis) and 40 percent perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne).
