The Japanese maple is not just Japanese maple, after all there are different, very similar species that are summarized under this term. In addition to the Japanese maple (Acer japonicum), the Japanese fan maple (Acer palmatum) and the rarer golden maple (Acer shirasawanum) also belong to this group. But no matter which Japanese maple you choose: Almost all types and varieties can be overwintered well.

This applies primarily to Japanese maples from the Acer japonicum group, which originally come from the rather harsh climate of the Japanese islands of Hokkaido and Honshu. In Hokkaido in particular, the summers tend to be short and mild, while the winters are long and cold. Especially in the months of December to February, temperatures can drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius and lower.

Nevertheless, young Japanese maples and specimens cultivated in pots should be provided with (light) winter protection. This can consist of covering mainly the root area with leaves / brushwood (especially spruce brushwood), jute or bast.
