Frost moth caterpillars are very hungry and are able to bare an entire fruit tree. The pests can be fought quite easily and in an environmentally friendly way with glue rings. This article tells you how to set it up correctly.

Glue rings are attached in the middle of the trunk

Create glue rings for pest control

Since the females of the Lesser Frosted Moth have to crawl up the bark of the trees to lay the eggs, an infestation can be very effectively prevented by glue rings. The following points must be observed here:

  • At the end of September, place the rings of special paper around the tree trunks.
  • Do not forget the support posts so that the animals do not use this detour to get to the top.
  • Apply the sticky strips to all the trees in the garden. This means they cannot be used as alternative quarters. Since the caterpillars can be carried to other trees with the wind, unintentional nesting in the useful trees equipped with a glue ring cannot be ruled out. Only protect them.

Method:

  1. Attach glue rings approximately in the middle of the trunk.
  2. The sticky paper strips must be positioned so that they cannot be bypassed by neighboring shoots or tall grass.
  3. Thoroughly brush the trunk clean in the affected area. All loose pieces of bark must be completely removed.
  4. Stuff the indentations well with paper. No slits should remain through which the female beetle could crawl up.
  5. The glue rings are made of tear-resistant special paper with a covered adhesive side. Lay the strip around the tree trunk to determine the required length including a few centimeters of overlap.
  6. Cut off.
  7. Attach to the trunk with the sticky side out. The paper must be tight and wrinkle-free.
  8. Secure with a binding wire at the top and bottom.

tips

If you only discover the infestation when the offspring of the small winter moth have already hatched, you can still take environmentally friendly countermeasures, because there are various effective means. For example, from an outside temperature of 15 degrees, you can treat the tree with the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, which destroys the caterpillars without harming other insects.
