Narrow leaves ensure a loose, bushy appearance, which is accompanied by orange to red and trumpet-shaped individual flowers. The dark red fruits are almost seductive. These factors are responsible for the fact that the pomegranate is very popular as a bonsai.

A mini pomegranate tree will delight bonsai enthusiasts

That's how the species grows

The pomegranate is a deciduous tree native to the Mediterranean region. The dwarf form Punica granatum var. nana is ideal for designing a bonsai, because it naturally remains small and reaches a maximum height of one meter. The cultivar 'Nejikan' develops twisted trunks, giving the mini tree a particularly attractive appearance.

styles

The wood allows all style forms that are offered in the art of bonsai. The most common is the broom shape, which you can shape with regular and targeted cuts. Wire techniques are not necessary for this growth habit. An upright tree also looks aesthetic.

To cut

Pruning measures are possible in the leafless phase in winter until spring before the branches sprout. Pomegranates tolerate heavy pruning and develop fresh shoots after two weeks. When the shoots have reached a length of 15 centimeters, they can be shortened to two to five pairs of leaves. This intervention is possible throughout the growing season.

exceptions

If flowering is desired, refrain from later interventions from April. The intensely glowing individual flowers appear at the ends of the shoots and round off the overall picture. So that the tree does not wear itself out too much, remove fruit except for a few specimens.

Wire and brace

The ideal time of year is spring, as soon as the buds start to swell. To prevent ingrowth and scarring, you need to check the growth weekly. One to two year old branches can be bent into a desired shape by wrapping wire around them. Older specimens are more difficult to shape as they break off easily. The anchoring method is suitable for influencing their orientation.

Care for

Like every mini tree, the pomegranate also requires coordinated care. Since the wood has limited space in the planter, water and nutrient administration is of great importance.

water demand

During the growth phase, pomegranates have a higher water consumption than during the dormant phase in winter. In the flowering period, this increases additionally. Since this also depends on the environmental conditions, you should keep an eye on the substrate surface. As soon as this has dried slightly, a penetrating irrigation takes place. Keep the soil slightly moist over the winter months.

nutritional needs

Fertilization takes place between March and mid-November, which you carry out at intervals of 14 days. When the plants are flowering, shut off the nutrient supply. Liquid fertilizers for bonsai provide the trees with all the nutrients they need. Mix the liquid with irrigation water. Fertilizer cones, which are used for potted plants, are recommended as an alternative.
