Cheerful bird chirping is the reward if you hang up a tit box correctly. Direction, height and location must be right for tits to move into the aviary. You can find out here how to attach tit boxes in a manner appropriate to the species.

Tits feel most comfortable in a tree

Hang up tit box - which direction?

A tit box is fully booked when the entrance hole points in the correct direction. How to do it right:

  • Ideal direction: entrance hole points to the east or south-east
  • Second-best orientation: Box opening faces north or northeast
  • Wrong directions: west or south

West facing tit boxes remain orphaned. The wise birds know full well that a home with this orientation will be flooded when it rains. Vacancies are also inevitable if you hang up a birdhouse facing south. The blazing sun turns the nesting aid into a sauna hostile to chicks.

Attach tit box - hang up how high?

Treetops are the best place for a tit box. The correct suspension height protects the feathered residents from being attacked by voracious predators. This is how high you should hang a nesting box for tits:

  • Suspension height: 1.5 to 4.0 m
  • Free entry lane
  • Ideally surrounded by fat balls as a food supply

Animal-friendly hobby gardeners have an open ear for the great housing shortage in the local bird world and put up several tit boxes. So that hard-working tit parents don't get in each other's enclosures, you should hang up birdhouses of the same design at least 5 to 10 meters away.

Hang up tit boxes - when and how?

The best time to hang up titmouse boxes is in autumn. Then birds, squirrels, wild bees and other garden animals can safely hibernate in the shelter of the box. Please use stainless steel nails and sheathed wire for fastening to the tree. That way, a tree doesn't have to take the toll with injuries for serving as a site for a tit box.

Hanging the tit box on the balcony - is that possible?

In urban habitats, there are few trees on which bird lovers can hang a nesting box (€49.85). Natural balcony gardeners don't need to be told twice and hang up a tit box. These criteria are important for a pair of tits to move in:

  • Suspension height: at least 1.5 m
  • Location: shady to semi-shady, sheltered from the rain under an eaves or awning
  • Stable: firmly mounted on the house wall
  • Security: without a perch as a potential perch for predatory ravens or magpies

Please avoid a location directly above the seat. Please hang up the tit box at a sufficient distance from climbing and privacy plants, which cheeky cats use as climbing aids to lay hands on defenseless tit chicks.

tips

Did you know that a starling box is just a slightly larger tit box? That is why amateur gardeners build a home for both bird species with craftsmanship. The main difference is the hole size. Tits are happy about a precisely fitting entrance with a diameter of 26 to 28 mm. The entrance hole on the star box is 45 to 48 mm in size.
