In the Alpine region, the name gentian stands for gentian schnapps, a bitter alcoholic drink. But the gentian does not only play a role in the production of schnapps. The roots of the yellow gentian are also used as a herbal remedy for all sorts of ailments.

Only the roots of the yellow gentian are used
Don't get too excited if you think you can harvest roots from your gentian in the garden or pot for naturopathic uses or schnapps making.
The roots of the blue gentian contain too little bitter substances. Only the yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea) has such a high proportion of bitter substances that its roots are suitable for naturopathy or alcohol production.
Gentian root as a remedy
Bitter substances are generally considered to stimulate the appetite and promote digestion and are therefore used for stomach problems and a feeling of fullness.
The high proportion of bitter substances in the root of the yellow gentian is also used for medicinal purposes. Even the famous pastor Kneipp recommended gentian root for the treatment of digestive problems.
Gentian root is administered in the following variations:
- tea
- decoction
- tincture
- liqueur
- booze
Contraindications of gentian root
Not everyone gets the high proportion of bitter substances. Some people react to gentian root with high blood pressure and headaches. Affected people who suffer from an irritable stomach should also be careful when taking gentian root.
If in doubt, it is better to consult the doctor before taking a gentian root cure.
However, apart from the high alcohol content, nothing speaks against a glass of gentian schnapps after a heavy meal.
Make schnapps from gentian root
It is quite easy to make schnapps from gentian root yourself.
Cut the root into small pieces and douse them with 40% alcohol. After three weeks, you can strain the roots and enjoy your digestive schnapps.
Root with long medicinal properties
The bitter substances remain in the gentian root for a long time. They can be stored for up to five years.
tips and tricks
Since yellow gentian is a nature reserve, you should plant this gentian species in the garden yourself to harvest roots. However, this is a lengthy process. It can take up to ten years for the yellow gentian to flower and be used for the first time.
