In order for fruit trees to develop healthy fruit over many years, the conditions in terms of location and soil should be right. Good planning before planting and the choice of a suitable planting date create optimal conditions for healthy growth.

Bare-rooted trees should be planted in mid-March at the latest

time

Apples, cherries, pears, plums and quinces are among the hardy fruit trees that can be planted in the fall. They grow well until winter and, with optimal care, produce the first fruits in the following year. If the trees are bare-rooted, plant them immediately after purchase by mid-March at the latest. Placement in a bucket filled with soil is recommended for short-term storage. Rooted fruit trees can be planted at any time during the season as long as they are well watered.

location

Some fruit trees grow in partially shaded locations. The greater the solar radiation, the more aromatic the pulp tastes. At the same time, the vitamin content increases and the fruit is optimally colored. Loose and humus-rich soils offer optimal growth conditions. In compacted subsoil, waterlogging quickly forms, which is not beneficial for the trees and shrubs. The ideal pH is between 6.0 and 6.5.

method

After removing the sod and digging a planting hole, use clean and sharp pruning shears to cut off the root tips. This measure stimulates the formation of new roots. Put the tree in the hole and check if the planting depth is sufficient. The trees should not be planted too deep. The original ground level was where the bark appears lighter.

Ground Preparations:

  • Enrich sandy soils with humus or bentonite
  • Improve clayey or loamy substrates with sand
  • Loosen the bottom of the planting hole with a digging fork
  • Work compost into the substrate

Position fruit tree and stake

If the depth of the hole has been adjusted, place the tree stake about four to six inches west of the trunk. In Central Europe, the west represents the main wind direction. The pole is driven into the ground with a sledgehammer. Fill the excavation into the planting hole and tamp down the substrate. Form a watering rim and water the wood thoroughly. A coconut cord is used to attach the trunk to the post.
