Martens may neither be killed nor hunted. Since the only legal option to fight a marten is to catch it with a live trap, it is advisable to keep it away in the first place. Various means can be used for this.

With wire and Co., access for martens can be blocked

block access

The best option against martens is to block all entrances. However, this is not easy, because martens fit through small holes of about 5cm in diameter. Even car owners cannot block martens from accessing the engine. In addition, martens are excellent climbers and can jump and swim.
Therefore, you should consider the following if you want to keep a marten away:

  • Block access to the roof through and at the gutter.
  • Check your roof for loose tiles and fix them.
  • Look for cracks and holes in the walls and roof and block them with solid material.
  • Lay wire mats under your car or in the attic. Martens avoid stepping on wires.

tips

If you are not sure how or whether the marten gets inside, you can spread chalk to make the marten's tracks visible.

Keep martens away with home remedies

It is not always possible to find and block all cracks and access points. It therefore makes sense to use additional means in the attic, in the barn or in the car to deter martens. This can be e.g.:

  • Fragrances that martens don't like, such as citrus or clove oil
  • Smell of enemy such as dog hair or fox urine (available in specialist shops)
  • Devices that emit light signals when moving
  • Ultrasonic Devices (Caution: Keeps useful bats away too!)
  • High voltage devices for the car
