The use of rooting powder is often recommended so that cuttings root faster and develop into strong young plants. Various preparations are commercially available which are intended to improve root formation and the growth of seedlings.

There are different types of rooting powders, e.g. with seaweed extract

How does rooting powder for professional use work and what does it contain?

These agents contain natural or chemical growth hormones. This can be, for example:

  • indole-3-acetic acid,
  • indole-3-butyric acid,
  • 1-Naphthaloacetic acid.

There are also solvents and fillers such as alcohol and talc.

The hormones belong to the group of growth regulators that occur in almost all higher plants. They are responsible for cell division and cell growth.

With cuttings, the administration of these active ingredients stimulates root growth. As a result, the offspring success increases in plants that form roots rather hesitantly and the failure rate is lower. The root system that is formed is also significantly more stable. The seedlings can absorb more water and nutrients and grow more vigorously.

Please note: These hormonal rooting powders are only permitted in Germany for commercial horticulture.

Root activator for the hobby gardener

Rooting powder made from algae extract, for example, is approved for home use. This works through natural growth hormones as well as nutrients and trace elements that promote root growth.

Other means contain soil additives with fertilizer components. However, these hardly affect the root formation of freshly cut cuttings. However, the preparations are quite helpful, plant seedlings that have already formed roots in substrate. The activators stimulate the offspring to root faster and better and to develop a stable root system.

How is rooting powder used correctly?

Since the dosage form of the preparations differs, you should read the package leaflet carefully before use and follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly. The following precautionary measures are recommended when handling products that contain chemical or semi-chemical hormones:

  • Always wear gloves when applying.
  • Make sure that the powder does not come into contact with the skin or mucous membranes.

tips

Be sure to avoid applying too much rooting powder. The effect is reversed by overdosing. The plants no longer form stronger roots, but die.
