Martens may not be hunted and caught by just anyone. That is why the do-it-yourselfer plagued by martens often only has home remedies to get rid of the animal. Below you can find out which home remedies help and how else you can ensure that the marten runs away.

catch marten?
Martens are not under nature protection. However, they are subject to hunting rights, which is why they may only be hunted and caught by hunters - and only outside of the closed season. Since serious penalties await in the event of a violation, it is better to use home remedies.
Effective home remedies against martens
Like most wild mammals, martens have a very sensitive nose and good ears. You can take advantage of both:
Smells against martens
There are several scents that martens can't stand; either because they remind you of enemies or because they are just too obtrusive. The former include:
- dog hair
- cat hair
- Dog, cat or fox urine
You can get cat or dog hair or urine from friends with pets; Fuchsurin can be bought online. A “real animal”, i.e. a cat or a dog, works even better. However, both should be fully grown in order to fight the marten.
The penetrating odors that martens hate include:
- Citrus scents (sliced lemons, essential oils, etc.)
- cloves
- toilet blocks
- vinegar
- Tea tree oil (also great against other pests like aphids)
- mothballs
- camphor leaves
tips
The following applies here: more helps more. Combine wildly strong scents and reapply regularly, because scents (especially in the form of essential oils) vanish quickly.
digression
Martens keep coming back
Martens usually have several hiding places in their territory of several hundred square meters and often stay away for a while. But they keep coming back. So stick with putting scent notes to tempt the marten to turn around when it returns.Double effect: sharp home remedies against martens
Chili or pepper also help particularly well against martens, in two ways: on the one hand, the pungent smell is unpleasant for them, on the other hand, they absorb the substance when cleaning. The sharpness is of course anything but pleasant for the martens - like us - so they will avoid the place in the future.
Noise against martens
Good hearing can be fatal to martens: you can purchase special ultrasonic devices in specialist shops that emit sounds that are imperceptible to our ears but very unpleasant for martens.
Alternatively, you can set up several wind chimes, radios are also recommended. Martens like quiet and will change hiding places if there is constant noise.
tips
Again, the more the better. For best results, combine noise with scent to make the marten's stay as uncomfortable as possible.
close entrances
No matter which variant you choose, you should definitely lock all entrances, after you are sure that the marten is gone. Under no circumstances should you lock the marten in its hiding place. Seal window openings, gutters and other entry points with wire or special protection against martens.
Note closed season
Do you have a female marten with young in the attic? It's no fun, but expulsion is out of the question in this case. Between the beginning of March and mid-October there is a closed season for martens and chasing them away or even killing them is strictly forbidden at this time. Endure the four months of rearing and then block all entrances to prevent further nest building.
