Hydroponics, i.e. the complete cultivation in water, is very popular, especially for indoor plants. But by no means every plant thrives when the root ball is permanently under water. If you would like to know whether the clusia, also known as the balsam apple, is suitable for this type of husbandry, you can find out everything you need to know on this page.

The common Clusia does not like wet feet
Unfortunately, the balsam apple is not suitable for hydroponics. The Clusia reacts very sensitively to waterlogging. If the root ball is exposed to high humidity over a long period of time, there is a risk of root rot and the houseplant will sooner or later die.
Alternating humidity and dryness should also be avoided. On the one hand, the substrate must never be too wet, on the other hand, the plant still has a moderate water requirement. In this case, the risk of fungal infection even increases.
tips
A drainage made of clay granules or sand makes the substrate more permeable and reduces the risk of waterlogging. Also make sure there is a drainage hole in the bottom of the bucket and regularly pour out excess water in the saucer.
The right care
Only water the Clusia when the top layer of substrate has dried. To check, use the thumb test by pressing your thumb slightly into the substrate. If you don't feel any moisture, it's time to water the plant.
You should definitely use decalcified water for this in order to maintain the slightly acidic pH value of the soil. In this way you protect your houseplant from leaf discoloration and chlorosis.
tips
Captured rainwater is particularly suitable for watering the Clusia. In addition, you can also use tap water that you leave for two to three days.
Water from above is welcome
The Clusia does not like standing water in the ground. But she has nothing against a shower from above. By gently rinsing the plant with a gentle stream, you not only clean the leaves, but also stimulate the vitality of the balsam apple.
exception
You can get specially bred specimens on the market that are also suitable for hydroponics. To do this, do not plant the exotic species in soil but in clay granules. In this case, it is important to install a water level meter that shows you when new water is needed.
