Trachycarpus fortunei, also known to many gardeners as the Chinese hemp palm, copes surprisingly well with the cold for a palm tree. The plant, which originates from the high mountains of Asia, even tolerates frost to a certain extent. That's why the hemp palm is allowed to leave the bucket and enter the garden bed.

Wait for the first few years
Young hemp palms are not yet sufficiently resilient or cold-resistant. They should therefore spend the first years of their life in a pot, the location of which can be flexibly adapted to needs and the weather. Only plant older specimens.
Ideal time for planting
It takes a long time until Trachycarpus fortunei has completely conquered a new soil with its roots. So that it actually gets the time it needs, it is only planted out in spring. Definitely not in autumn! Carry out the planting on a dry, mild day in April or at the latest in May.
Find a suitable location
The hemp palm likes warm places with lots of light, but direct sun is not conducive to the appearance of the leaves.
- the location should be sheltered from the wind
- otherwise the plate-like palm fronds will fray unattractively
- get brown edges afterwards
- only cultivate outdoors in harsh regions with winter protection
- the rougher the region, the more protected the palm tree has to be
- for example on a south wall
Optimize soil conditions
A humus-rich, nutrient-rich and well-drained soil with a pH between 5.3 and 7.5 is ideal. Soil containing clay should be optimized before planting by adding lava granulate (€13.99) and leaf compost.
process of planting
- Dig a sufficiently large and, above all, deep planting hole so that the long taproot is not kinked.
- Place a drainage layer of potsherds or expanded clay (€19.73) in the planting hole.
- Enrich the excavation with compost or horn shavings (€32.93), then you no longer have to fertilize for the first time.
- Take the palm tree out of the pot and put it in place.
- Fill in the gaps with the excavation, pressing it down well so that no cavities form.
- Water the palm with soft water.
- Spread a layer of leaves or grass clippings around the root area.
tips
If the hemp palm was previously indoors, you should shade it with a parasol for about two weeks after planting.
