The Chinese hemp palm may have special requirements in terms of their nutrient supply in this country, because the living conditions can be challenging for them. But does that mean that the cornucopia must be generously poured out over them? D rather not! Read more about the needs-based fertilization of this palm species.

Planted hemp palms need to be fertilized less often than hemp palms in pots

Appropriate fertilizers and dosage

In order for Trachycarpus fortunei to diligently sprout new palm fronds in summer and go into winter stronger, it needs certain nutrients in sufficient quantities. Right from the start, the following should be noted with regard to the dosage: The palm gets along better with too little fertilizer, especially if the soil conditions are right. On the other hand, too much fertilizer is harmful.

Outside, it is best to fertilize with compost, horse manure or horn shavings (32.93€). Pot palms are easier to supply with a fertilizer from the trade. Special palm fertilizer with plenty of nitrogen is ideal. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. To avoid harmful over-fertilization, it is even advisable to reduce the recommended dosage a little.

When is fertilized?

Immediately after planting in the bed or after repotting, the hemp palm does not need to be fertilized for a few months. Because potting soil from the trade is enriched with nutrients, while in the garden the excavation is usually mixed with compost.

Planted specimens get the organic long-term fertilizer in spring. A second portion may be given by July at the latest if the soil is very poor and sandy. After that and during the winter, no more fertilizer is applied.

Potted plants can be supplied with a suitable long-term fertilizer or fertilizer sticks (€4.48) or you can use a liquid fertilizer every two weeks. However, fertilizer is only used during the growth period from the end of March to September.

tips

If the hemp palm in the garden shows yellow leaves, this could be an indication of a nutrient deficiency. In this case, you should use a mineral fertilizer such as blue corn, because its nutrients are immediately available.

Home remedies as fertilizer

In addition to commercially available fertilizers and compost, a few proven home remedies can also be used to fertilize the hemp palm:

  • diluted nettle manure
  • diluted comfrey manure
  • coffee grounds (rich in nitrogen)

tips

Too much coffee grounds can lead to acidification of the soil. Provide the palm with additional rock flour. (14.13€) This counteracts this and also contributes some valuable trace elements.
