With almost every plant, the question arises as to whether it makes sense to use scissors or whether it is even mandatory. Better growth and even more flowers are the declared goals. But does the bush called chaste tree really need it? And if so how much? We clarify.
The chaste tree can grow very large if its growth is not restrictedThe minimalist cut
Many experts give tips on cultivating this type of plant. One would think that their statements would roughly match. But when it comes to cutting the chaste tree, there are quite a few different recommendations to read. It may be that each has its justification.
It takes the least effort if only the faded shoots of the previous year are removed in spring. As long as the bush develops well, there is nothing to be said against it. However, there is a risk that chaste tree will age and consequently its flowering capacity will decrease. Then the shrub must be rejuvenated by removing senile shoots close to the ground.
Remove frostbite in spring
It may also be necessary to cut off some frozen branches each year. The fact that parts of the plant above ground freeze to death in very cold winters is more common with this shrub because it is only moderately hardy. Luckily it sprouts again from the base.
Encourage compact growth
Nurseries that propagate chaste tree and offer it for sale recommend a strong pruning every year. It doesn't matter whether the plant grows in garden soil or in a bucket.
- cut in spring
- Shorten all shoots to about 20 cm
- Plant sprouts compact
- the flowers are formed on new shoots
tips
Don't worry if the chaste tree takes its time with new growth. If the winter has been particularly rough, it can even wait until June.
shrink size
Finally, the size of the shrub can cause problems for its owner. When planted, chaste tree can easily reach heights and widths of up to 3 m in a good location. Even in the pot it grows up to 1.5 m high. If necessary, the bush is allowed to lose volume in the spring.
In autumn, tub specimens have to hibernate indoors. For reasons of space, the shrub may also be cut back at this time.
