Many experts give tips on cultivating this type of plant. One would think that their statements would roughly match. But when it comes to cutting the chaste tree, there are quite a few different recommendations to read. It may be that each has its justification.
It takes the least effort if only the faded shoots of the previous year are removed in spring. As long as the bush develops well, there is nothing to be said against it. However, there is a risk that chaste tree will age and consequently its flowering capacity will decrease. Then the shrub must be rejuvenated by removing senile shoots close to the ground.
Remove frostbite in spring
It may also be necessary to cut off some frozen branches each year. The fact that parts of the plant above ground freeze to death in very cold winters is more common with this shrub because it is only moderately hardy. Luckily it sprouts again from the base.
Encourage compact growth
Nurseries that propagate chaste tree and offer it for sale recommend a strong pruning every year. It doesn't matter whether the plant grows in garden soil or in a bucket.
