The crown of fame is a warm-spoiled climbing plant that cannot remain in our garden bed all year round. That's what they say here year after year: plant in the spring and dig up again in the fall. Planting once can only be done in a mobile pot. This is how it's done.

The Gloriosa needs a bright, warm location

planting time outside

Since the crown of glory, bot. Gloriosa rothschildiana, which does not tolerate frost, may only be planted outside or placed outside with a pot from mid-May. Such a late start to the vegetation phase automatically means that flowering begins later. Almost every owner is bothered by this, so he lets them drive in the house.

time to advance

In autumn the crown of glory was brought into the house to spend the winter. Either as a bare tuber or still in its pot. The bare tubers must be planted for propulsion. Specimens that have overwintered in the pot may also need a new, larger pot and fresh soil. At the end of February/beginning of March you should put this project on your to-do list.

This is how propulsion works

Before you start planting, you should carefully inspect each tuber to see if it is still in good condition. How to plant:

  1. First put a drainage layer of coarse material in the pot.
  2. Then fill it up to about 8 cm below the edge with a loose substrate. A mixture of potting soil, leaf soil and compost is ideal.
  3. Place the tuber on the ground and cover it with a 3-5 cm layer of soil.
  4. Pour on crown of glory.
  5. Place the pot at least 20 °C warm and bright.
  6. As soon as the first shoots appear, place the pot a little cooler.
  7. You can now fertilize the crown of glory a little.

tips

Wear gloves when planting the Gloriosa. This plant is poisonous, especially the tuber.

Breathe fresh air

The pot can be placed outside on warm, sunny days, even if the frost is not over yet. You just have to keep an eye on the weather and, if necessary, bring the Gloriosa back into the house.

Plant outside

From mid-May, the crown of fame can finally move outdoors. You can either leave them in the pot or plant them in garden soil.

  • choose a sunny spot
  • with morning and midday sun
  • the soil should be humic and permeable
  • maintain the planting depth
  • water well
