Every year the tuber of a Gloriosa rothschildiana, popularly known as the crown of glory, has to be replanted. Since it is only allowed to enter the garden from mid-May after hibernation, it is placed in the pot in the meantime. In him she drives forward in the house.

The Crown of Glory is a special garden plant

promote crown of glory

A crown of glory should end its hibernation as early as the end of February/ mid-March so that it can advance. Of course, it can also be planted directly in the garden bed at a later date. But then her best time, when she is in full bloom, is reduced to a minimum. Here's how to propel them around the house:

  • Fill pot with drainage layer
  • then add a loose substrate
  • A mixture of potting soil, compost and foliage soil is ideal
  • put tuber on it
  • Cover with 3-5 cm of soil and water
  • keep at least 20 °C warm and bright
  • keep a little cooler after sprouting
  • then fertilize for the first time

Time for the outdoors

The size reached is not decisive when the Gloriosa rothschildiana is allowed outside. The decisive factor is the weather, which must no longer bring frost. That is why Gloriosa is only brought outside or planted permanently from mid-May. If the weather is mild much earlier, the pot can go outside, but must be brought back in in good time when frost is announced.

tips

To be on the safe side, wear gloves when planting

Gloriosa rothschildiana is poisonous. The highest concentration of poison is in the tuber.

Plant outside

If you don't want the Gloriosa to continue growing in the pot, which is quite possible, you have to look for a suitable spot for it in the garden. Plant it where it gets morning and afternoon sun. The soil should be permeable and humus.

Don't set the Crown of Glory deeper than it stood before. Then water them well.

Set up a climbing aid

Gloriosa grows very quickly as it only has one summer to shine above ground. However, this climbing plant forms very thin tendrils that cannot stand up on their own. Provide a suitable climbing aid immediately after planting.

The crown of fame also needs a stable climbing aid in the pot. This should ideally be firmly attached to the pot.
