Like all bulbous plants, the Ismene must be planted at the optimum depth. If this does not happen, it does not drive out or has no support. It's a pity to learn the importance of planting depth too late. This cannot happen to you, because below you can discover the decisive values.

The optimal planting depth depends on the size of the bulb

Don't neglect planting depth

The Ismene is a bulb plant that not every gardener in this country has had experience with. But the unusual flower invites you to try this tropical plant instead of just planting tulips and daffodils.

However, Ismene's onions are not cheap. If you don't pay attention to the right depth when planting, you can quickly waste money. Namely, if the plant does not sprout because of this.

Optimum planting depth

With twice the length of the bulb as a rule of thumb, the gardener is well advised when planting native bulbous plants. Does this also apply to this plant from afar? We get specific and give the depth in measurable numbers. The planting depth is:

  • for smaller bulbs 8 cm
  • for larger bulbs 10 cm

tips

A single Ismene is lost in the garden. When planting several bulbs, however, you should also observe the planting distance between two bulbs in addition to the planting depth. This is 15 to 20 cm.

Food for voles

If the Ismene does not sprout despite the correct planting depth, it may no longer be in the ground. Because at this planting depth, the onion is not safe from voles. Therefore, plant them together with a plant basket (€11.99) in which they remain out of reach for mice.

Other crucial factors

Even a depth measured with millimeter precision is no guarantee for white flowers. If the bulbs of this plant species are planted too early, they can freeze deep in the ground instead of sprout fresh green.

Ismene bulbs tolerate zero frost. For this reason, onions that have already been purchased must be safely stored indoors until there is no longer any risk of frost by mid-May. In autumn, on the other hand, you have to dig up the bulbs again and overwinter them frost-free until the next planting season.

tips

When caring for the Ismene in the summer, pay attention to species-appropriate watering behavior. Too much moisture causes the onion to rot.
