The Guzmania plant has only a short existence. Even the owner can't change that. But in cooperation with the old specimen, he can provide new seedlings. While it expels Kindl willingly and on its own, he has to give them their own pot when the time comes.

Short life calls for replacement
After about 2-3 years, the life of this bromeliad species comes to an end. It blooms, withers and then dies off completely. If the vacated space is to be occupied again with this bromeliad species, you must ask yourself the question of propagation in good time.
An easy and a hard method
There are two ways to propagate this bromeliad species:
- the arduous journey of seed propagation,
- and the easy way via Kindel
The two propagation methods are described in more detail below.
Propagation from seeds
The hybrid varieties that are common here cannot be propagated by seeds. The true Guzmania, on the other hand, provides us with usable seeds. But at home sowing turns out to be tedious and demanding. Germination is only possible from a soil temperature of at least 25 °C. Even after that, the young plants have to be offered constant living conditions for a full three years. These include humid air and a minimum temperature of 22 °C.
The seeds, whether from your own plant or from a specialist shop, must be sown as soon as possible, because the seed does not remain germinable for long. The best time for sowing is spring.
Propagation by Kindel
The propagation by Kindel is much easier to implement. After flowering, the plant itself sprouts small daughter plants to the side, which can lead an independent existence after separation.
- Carefully cut off the children from the mother plant
- plant in light, nutrient-rich soil
- cover with a large glass
- alternatively cover with translucent foil
- keep warm and partially shaded
- ideal soil temperature is 25°C
- water sparingly at the beginning
tips
After about four months, you should treat the young plants like adult specimens in terms of care.
Optimum time
Leave the offshoots on the mother plant for as long as possible. This will make them more resilient and bloom faster after separation. It is recommended that the youngsters are about half the size of the mother plant when planted. You should preferably get your own pot in the spring.
