Ice begonias are known, among other things, as grave plants, which does not necessarily contribute to their popularity. But they are also ideal for planting in pots and balcony boxes, where they provide a splash of color throughout the summer.

Ice begonias are quite undemanding ornamental plants

Does the polar begonia need sun or shade?

The ice begonia is a fairly undemanding plant that does quite well in both shade and sun. However, she feels particularly comfortable in the semi-shade. There the ice begonia shows its abundance of flowers particularly lush. The flowering period begins in May and only ends with the first frost. You can decorate your balcony with little effort.

How to care for ice begonias on the balcony?

On the balcony, the ice begonia needs only slightly more care than in the flower bed. The substrate in the balcony box should always be a little damp and only dry slightly on the surface before you water it again. However, under no circumstances should waterlogging occur, otherwise your ice begonia will die. Off and add a little liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water.

What colors are ice begonias in?

Both the colors of the foliage and the flowers of the ice begonias can vary. The foliage can be green or reddish, the flower colors range from white to pink to red. Two-tone variants are very decorative.

Are Ice Begonias Hardy?

Unfortunately, the ice begonia is anything but hardy. It freezes to death at around 0 °C. Often a new plant is simply bought in the spring. But that is not necessary, because you can easily overwinter the ice begonia.

For this, however, the plant must be brought to a frost-free place in good time. Temperatures around 15 °C are ideal. If there is enough light there, the polar begonia will continue to bloom, sometimes throughout the winter.
