Instead of the usual balcony flowers, you can also plant and cultivate perennials in tubs or pots. Many types are ideal for this.

Lavender also grows well in pots

Advantages of perennials in tubs

You can enjoy planting perennials in a bucket for several years. Unlike most flowers that end up in the compost bin at the end of summer, many perennials spend the winter peacefully in their respective containers, ready to kick off the new season with a bang.

Note: In order to be absolutely sure that the perennials kept in the bucket really survive the winter unscathed, we advise you to move the plants together, place them against a protective wall or house wall and cover the containers - i.e. buckets or pots - with bubble wrap and cover with brushwood or leaves.

These species are ideal for keeping in buckets

In addition to trees and shrubs that remain small (keyword bonsai), perennial flowers form the second mainstay in the bucket garden. Here is an overview of perennial species that feel great in a bucket or pot:

  • Columbine (various colors; flowers from May to June; grows to about 75 centimeters high; wants shade or semi-shade)
  • Lady's Mantle (yellow; flowers from June to July; grows to about 40 centimeters; wants sun)
  • Hosta (purple; flowers from July to August; grows to about 30 centimeters; wants shade or semi-shade)
  • Knotted Bellflower (blue; flowers from June to July; grows to about 60 centimeters high; wants sun or semi-shade)
  • Lavender (purple; flowers from June to July; grows to about 40 centimeters; wants sun)
  • Lupine (various colors; flowers from July to August; grows to about 80 centimeters; wants sun)
  • Prachtspiere (pink; flowers from June to July; grows to about 50 centimeters high; wants shade or partial shade)
  • Coral bells (red; flowers from May to July; grows to about 50 centimeters high; wants sun or partial shade)
  • Purple coneflower (red; flowers from July to September; grows to about 100 centimeters; wants sun)
  • Cranesbill (various colors; flowers from June to August; grows to about 30 centimeters; wants sun or partial shade)
  • Bleeding Heart (pink; flowers April to May; grows to about 60 centimeters; wants shade or partial shade)

By the way: It is up to you whether you place the perennials cultivated in tubs on the balcony, terrace or in the garden. Just make sure that the prevailing site conditions harmonize with the requirements of the respective perennials.
