Spring is considered the traditional planting time for perennials, although for most plants in this genus, fall is the better season to grow. Nevertheless, there are some perennials that you should (only) plant in spring. This post tells you all the essential details about planting perennials in spring.

Lilies are planted in spring

These perennials are good for spring planting

First of all, it should be noted that the majority of perennials are hardy and should tend to be planted in autumn. In addition, however, there are also several types of perennials that not only prefer planting in spring, but absolutely need them in order to thrive magnificently. We are referring here above all to frost-sensitive perennials, which include certain types of lilies.

Such perennials generally get a much better start in life if they are not directly confronted with freezing cold in the first few weeks and months. Often the roots of these plants are not strong enough to survive the winter unscathed. We therefore explicitly advise you to always plant frost-sensitive perennials in spring and never in autumn.

Note: In autumn, mid-October is the last meaningful date. If you miss this moment with your hardy perennials, you should postpone planting until spring altogether.

When exactly to plant perennials in spring?

The best time to plant perennials in spring is March, April and May.

Note: Spring is also the perfect time for transplanting perennials. Give your plants their new location between late March and early May.

What to consider when planting perennials in spring

Planting perennials is not too difficult. You don't need any experience to accomplish this task. However, there are a few points to consider. We have briefly summarized the most important details for you here:

  • In spring there are sometimes long periods of drought. Be sure to water your freshly planted perennials sufficiently during these times!
  • Each perennial has certain demands on the location (sun versus semi-shade or shade, soil conditions, wind-protected place, etc.). Meet her this!
  • Use the recommended planting distances in the bed as a guide if you want to plant several perennials.
  • It is important to leave the perennials without soil for as short a time as possible when planting or transplanting.
