With their large leaves, they are reminiscent of lettuce plants, with their numerous, bell-shaped flowers, they evoke associations with lungwort - we're talking about bergenia. Falling in love with her is not uncommon. As a result, propagation is obvious, with division of the plant being the most advisable.

The right time to share
After the Bergenia has bloomed, it's the perfect time to share. This is the case in summer to autumn. The soil should still be loose and not permeated by frost.
The period between mid-September and early October is best suited for division. In midsummer, the divided specimens would need a lot of water to grow, which is why early autumn is preferable.
Precise procedure in step-by-step instructions
Only share healthy plants and when the soil is moist! Proceed as follows:
- Plant has a shallow root system
- lift out the root ball with a digging fork or spade
- Using a knife, a spade or your bare hands, divide the root ball once in half or several times
- divided rootstocks should be 10 cm long
Each piece that came about through the division should have a few leaves. You should also be careful not to damage the fine roots too much! Remove old, brown or broken leaves and immerse each specimen in lukewarm water!
Plant in a new place
Go on:
- choose a sunny to partially shaded location
- Dig and loosen the planting hole
- enrich with compost
- Distance between the individual planting holes: at least 40 cm
- for a carpet growth: put 7 to 9 pieces per square meter
- Plant roots flat
- cover with soil and water well
- water regularly for the next 4 weeks
Share - not just to multiply
Division of Bergenia should be done every 4 to 5 years. Not only the plant can be propagated here. The mother plant is rejuvenated by this procedure at the same time. In addition, it can be transplanted to another location.
tips
Before dividing the bergenia, it should be cut down. Then the division works much easier and the plant is then hindered by overly long flower stalks and the like when rooting.
