Most of the perennials already show their flowers in the main summer months - i.e. in July and August. However, there are also species that fascinate with a blooming richness of colors in September. We have put together our favorite perennials for late summer for you.

Color fireworks in late summer
From bright yellow flowers to impressive violet or deep blue perennials: the variety of plants that fire off their blossom fireworks in late summer is very large.
Yellow flowering perennials
In late summer, for example, the pretty yellow flowers of goldenrod, coneflowers and perennial sunflowers reveal themselves. They come into their own in combination with various grasses, such as feather grasses.
Recommendation: Among the perennial sunflowers, the lemon-yellow variety "Lemon Queen" is a real highlight. Compared to other perennial sunflowers, it has quite large flowers. It also flowers extraordinarily richly. This perennial likes a spot in full sun in nutrient-rich, loamy soil.
Pink and violet flowering clusters
The aster is one of the pink and/or violet blooming highlights in the late summer perennial border. They come in many types and varieties. For example, the cushion asters, which grow up to 50 centimeters high, are extremely popular. However, taller species such as the smooth-leafed aster and the tawny-leafed aster are also very popular. These reach heights of up to 150 centimeters.
In general, asters want a place that is as sunny as possible and nutritious soil. Potential partners are the sunflowers mentioned above or ornamental grasses.
Blue flowering perennials
A perennial that only begins to flower in September is the autumn monkshood. He inspires with his blue-violet flower clusters. These are so conspicuous that they draw attention to themselves in every perennial border. You can achieve a stylish contrast with white flowering plants such as the autumn anemone "Honorine Jobert", which shines brightly into October. Both plant beauties feel most comfortable in a semi-shady location, but are not sad about a lot of sun, provided they get a little more water.
Other recommended late summer perennials
- Tall sedum: usually with pink or white umbels of flowers, can grow to be hand-sized, flowers in August and September
- Caucasus Germander: numerous upright flower spikes in noble crimson, real insect magnet, flowers between June and October
- Candle knotweed: sometimes white, sometimes pink, sometimes red-colored small flower candles, flowers from August
