Sometimes it is heard or read that the traditional planting time for perennials is spring. In fact, with most plants of this genus, it makes much more sense to plant in the fall. In our article, we reveal why this is so.

Hardy perennials such as moss saxifrage are planted in autumn

These perennials are great for fall planting

In principle, almost all perennials are suitable for planting in autumn. Especially the hardy plants, which you can easily hibernate, prefer to start life in the "third season".

Which perennials you should NOT plant in the fall

There is one exception to the "autumn rule": frost-sensitive perennials want to be planted in spring so that they can thrive better.

Therefore, autumn is the perfect planting time for many perennials

If you plant your perennials in autumn, you should do it between the end of September and mid-October - in other words, in early autumn. At this point in time there are a few aspects that force healthy, magnificent growth:

  • The perennials have already completed their above-ground growth.
  • The roots of the plants can continue to grow well in the warm soil.

Ideally, the temperatures should stay nice and mild for a few weeks after planting, until winter sets in. Sufficient rainfall should also be ensured. Under such conditions, the perennials usually manage to stabilize their root system enough to survive the cool season unscathed. You can then prepare wonderfully for spring.

Attention: We expressly advise you to plant your (hardy) perennials by mid-October at the latest. Later, there may not be enough time for the plants to develop a strong, robust root system.

What to consider when planting perennials in autumn

Planting perennials is relatively easy. You don't need any experience to master this task. However, there are a few points to consider, most notably these:

  • Each perennial has certain requirements for the location (sun versus shade, soil, sheltered from the wind, etc.). Meet her this!
  • Stick to the recommended planting distances in the bed.
  • It is important not to leave the perennials without soil for too long when planting.
