Java moss grows wild along streams and rivers in Indonesia. Partly in the air, partly submerged in water. But it can also be cultivated at home. It is content with the smallest aquarium and a minimum of care. Read more about the Southeast Asian plant that glows so beautifully green.

Java moss is a beautiful, low-maintenance choice for the aquarium

Beautiful and useful

The java moss makes a lot with its green, dense shoots. But it is also practical if there are small water dwellers in the aquarium. Shrimp and little fish like to hide in the fine twigs or find their food in them.

Due to its low growth height of max. 20 cm, the java moss is ideally suited for foreground planting together with the java fern. The green carpets are also popular in aquascaping.

Buy and multiply

The first java moss is either a purchase or a gift. Once a specimen is in the aquarium, reproduction is soon possible. To do this, a piece of the moss carpet that has formed is cut off and planted somewhere else.

Ideal living conditions

The java moss does not have high demands on the water, which is why the ideal values are almost always achieved by itself. The pH value does not play an important role for him, only the temperature should be taken into account. It is in a range of 20 to 30 °C, which is not difficult to achieve.

The second factor that ensures good growth is brightness. It can be sunny to half-shady for this moss. The brighter it is, the faster it grows. Targeted lighting is therefore recommended.

Attach java moss

Java moss can be used in a variety of ways as a design element in the aquarium, because it can grow on the tank floor or on objects or even float in the water.

  • Cover the java moss with some substrate
  • or complain about something else
  • alternatively attach to stone or piece of root
  • with nylon or sewing thread
  • after a few weeks it forms its own adhesive roots
  • then remove the fastening material

maintenance

The care is easy. In order for the moss to grow well, it should be fertilized occasionally with a liquid fertilizer. Cutting is usually not necessary. The scissors are only used when the dense branches need to be thinned out or the moss needs to have a certain shape.
