Basically, peppermint is hardy and does not need any special winter protection in a sheltered location. However, in very cold locations and when kept in pots, a light frost protection is recommended.

Hibernation outdoors

Cut the peppermint down completely before winter.

Cover the plant with spruce branches or other suitable materials. Branches from coniferous trees are particularly suitable because they shed the needles in spring and allow light to reach the plant. It will then grow back faster.

Overwinter peppermint on the balcony

The soil freezes faster in the pot. Therefore place the planter in a protected corner on a styrofoam plate. (35.50€) Cover the pot with bubble wrap and place some leaves or other insulating material over the plant.

tips and tricks

You can also overwinter the peppermint in the pot indoors. Put them in a bright, cool place and water them very sparingly.
