If you are planning to create beds or paved garden areas and would like to save yourself the time-consuming, mechanical weeding almost completely in the future, you should think about laying out soil fleece. More environmentally friendly than using herbicides, this material is also well suited to organic gardens where labor needs to be kept to a minimum.

The weed fleece is cut where the plants go

What is weed fleece?

It is a fabric cover that is available in different strengths.

strength operation area info
50gsm kitchen garden Relatively thin, so durability is limited. Strong weeds could pierce the fleece.
100gsm Kitchen garden, ornamental garden, Japanese garden Tough enough to be covered with mulch (€239.00) or soil.
150gsm Kitchen garden, ornamental garden, rock gardens, paths, sloping surfaces Stable and also suitable for areas that are heavily overgrown by weeds. The shelf life is several years.
300gsm All areas of application already mentioned, commercial horticulture, traveled paths Very robust and durable, but relatively expensive.

Since sunlight does not penetrate the material, photosynthesis is prevented and the wild plants die. On the other hand, useful and ornamental plants are optimally supplied with all nutrients, air and water due to the permeable structure.

Laying instructions for floor fleece

  • First, clear the area completely of weeds. If this is not done, strong weed plants could push through the thinner grades. With thicker fabrics, weeds could cheekily grow out of the planting holes.
  • Lay the fleece immediately after tilling the soil so that the weeds do not germinate again immediately.
  • Spread out the weed mat (€21.70) and weigh down the edges with stones or bricks. This prevents slipping.
  • If the material is to be deployed on sloping areas, you must also secure it with ground anchors.
  • Lay out all the plants to check the later position again.
  • Cut a not too large cross into the material where you want to insert the plants.
  • After planting, lay the fleece close to the stems.
  • Finally, cover the ground fleece with a thin layer of soil, bark mulch or gravel.

Weed fleece under paving stones

If you would like to enjoy permanently weed-free paths, we recommend laying floor fleece for the system.

Completely cover the already excavated area to be paved with the material and anchor the fabric with pegs. This is essential as the fleece is exposed to significantly greater loads.

Then apply the undercoat and smooth it out carefully. After that you can pave the path as desired.

tips

Exposure to sunlight noticeably affects the durability of weed control fabric. However, if you cover the material with mulch or a layer of soil, the more stable qualities will last around 25 years.
