In summer, balcony flowers give a colourful, fragrant guest performance. We enjoy that to the fullest. After that it's much too cold outside for us, we prefer to stay inside. But what about the balcony plants? Can we leave them in the rain and snow?

Balcony or winter quarters?
This question cannot be answered unequivocally with yes or no. Because the winter hardiness varies from balcony plant to balcony plant.
- some balcony plants tolerate sub-zero temperatures well
- they can stay outside
- for others, even low plus degrees are devastating
- they have to move to a frost-free winter quarters in good time
While most apartments have a balcony, suitable rooms for winter storage are almost never available. Since the pots take up far too much space, many flowers are only cultivated as annuals. They have to be bought new in the following year. This is both a pity and expensive in the long run.
tips
When planting in spring, think about the coming autumn. If you have to leave your plants outside all the time, choosing hardy plants makes sense.
Winter protection is essential
Even hardy balcony plants do not like the cold. Especially in a bucket, it can easily reach its roots. Therefore, place your balcony plants as protected as possible or under a canopy. Wrap them with fleece and place insulating styrofoam sheets under the pots.
tips
Stop fertilizing your balcony flowers as early as mid-August. This will give you an opportunity to harden your shoots.
