The colorful autumn leaves on sidewalks and streets just look beautiful. Do you remember as a child how fascinated you were by the rustling sound when you walked through the sea of leaves? When it rains, however, the leaves quickly become a slippery hazard. Because of this, everyone is obliged to sweep the sidewalk in front of their front door. In this article you will find answers to the most important (legal) questions.

The wider the broom, the faster the sweeping

Legal regulations

time

Unlike us humans, trees do not sleep at night when it comes to leaf shedding. However, night owls should not expect to find completely cleaned sidewalks late in the evening or in the early hours of the morning. During the day you are required to sweep leaves at the following times:

  • weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m
  • on weekends from 9 a.m

aids

Sweeping leaves with a broom is quite tedious. However, there are limited times for using a leaf blower:

  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m
  • and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m

However, if you own a low-noise device, you can use it at normal times. Noiseless leaf blowers are marked accordingly.

disposal

Under no circumstances should you dispose of your swept-up leaves in the street drain. The return carriage threatens at the latest with the next heavy rain. Since the leaves cause the streets to flood, it is advisable not only to clear the sidewalks of the leaves, but also to clean the gully from time to time, if this is possible for you.
You have the following options for disposal:

  • Disposal at the recycling center
  • Disposal in the compost bin
  • compost foliage

In the high season, many municipalities set up extra bins for leaf disposal.

Individual Rules

Different regulations apply in some municipalities with regard to the time and intensity of cleaning. The best way to find out more is on the website or by phone. Sometimes you are even obliged to remove leaves from the sidewalk as well as the road.
As a tenant, the responsibility for leaf disposal should be regulated in writing in the rental agreement. With a bit of luck, the local waste disposal department will take care of the disposal itself.
