Plant pots made of concrete are robust and continue to have many advantages. A frequent problem, however, is the transport from the hardware store to your own garden. Especially large concrete buckets have a high dead weight. But who says that you can not only save effort but also costs? On this page you will find detailed instructions on how to build a concrete planter yourself with little effort.

Concrete planters are easy to make yourself

Required material

  • cement
  • water
  • coarse quartz sand (15.85€) or bird sand from the pet shop
  • Peat to taste (forms dark streaks for a rustic look)
  • water
  • Containers such as buckets, bowls or wooden boxes
  • wire brush
  • a stone drill

Note: It does not matter whether you use cement or bird sand for the nature of your planter. The latter gives your bucket a stony look.

Action

  1. mix the dry ingredients in equal proportions with cement
  2. add water
  3. the mass should be sticky, but not too firm
  4. Pour the mixture into a large bucket
  5. press a second, smaller bucket into the middle of the mould
  6. weigh down the small bucket with a heavy object
  7. leave to rest for at least two days, depending on the weather
  8. then take it out of the mold
  9. Finely sand unwanted roughness with a wire brush
  10. Drill a hole in the ground with the masonry drill so that the irrigation water can drain off later
  11. Now you can plant the self-made concrete planter

Note: Make absolutely sure that your concrete planter is at least 5 cm thick. Otherwise the material threatens to burst in the event of frost.

Embellish concrete planters

Any cement left? Then use the excess mixture to add color to your planter. You can get small mosaic stones in the craft shop. When shopping, be sure to choose weatherproof outdoor ornaments. Otherwise, you can also use colored potsherds. Glue this to the outer edge of your plant pot with the remaining cement as you wish.

It does not always have to be a planter. Of course, birds are also happy about a self-made bird bath made of concrete. The use of a wooden box as a mold is ideal for this.
