    To ensure that the graceful ornamental grass stays with you for many years, set the course with the right planting. The perfect time corridor for this measure extends over the mild autumn months. At the selected location, loosen the soil thoroughly in order to dig several pits at a generous planting distance. The grass really comes into its own in small groups. During this preparatory work, the still potted root ball is soaked in water until no more air bubbles rise.     Which location is suitable?

    The wide range of sedge species has the ideal grass for all light and temperature conditions. Most of the magnificent grasses prefer a sunny to semi-shady location with nutrient-rich, fresh, moist soil. If it is a sunny and dry place in the gravel bed or on the roof garden, robust species such as the crested sedge or brocade sedge are on hand. To border a pond with ornamental grass, you are well advised to use the morning star sedge.

    The right planting distance

    The habit defines the ideal distance to the neighboring bed. Plant small, clumpy grasses 25-30 cm apart in the ground. Medium-sized varieties with a taut, upright silhouette stand out at a planting distance of 35-40 cm. The majestic giant sedge, on the other hand, requires a planting distance of 70-80 cm.

    What soil does the plant need?

    If you adjust the soil conditions to the selected sedge species, the cultivation of the undemanding plant runs in a regulated manner. If the quality of the soil at the location does not come close to the ideal conditions, soil additives provide a remedy. Compacted soil becomes more permeable and looser with the help of sand, grit or perlite. Soil that is too sandy is given a more stable consistency by adding compost or bark humus. For grasses in pots, we recommend high-quality potting soil with a low peat content, optimized with lava granules (€13.99) or expanded clay. (€19.73) If the pH value fluctuates between 5.5 and 6.8, the sedge world is in order.

    What is the best planting time?

    Ornamental grasses, like the sedge, take on the status of a perennial. As a result, it is planting time twice a year. Although a plant in a container can basically be planted during the entire vegetation period, the general conditions favor these time windows:

    • Planting ornamental grass ideally in the fall during the months of September through October
    • Alternatively, use in spring as soon as the ground has thawed and the weather is frost-free

    Cut sedge properly

    Wintergreen grasses are not cut in autumn for aesthetic and maintenance reasons. In this way, you rob yourself of a magical look when the graceful grass tufts are covered with glittering frost and snow. In addition, the withered blades of grass act as a natural winter protection. How to properly cut ornamental grass:

    • Cut the overwintered grass at the end of January/beginning of February
    • Tie the eyrie together in several small bundles and cut off close to the ground
    • Be sure to wear gloves to protect yourself from the sharp edges of the grass

    If fresh shoots are already visible, cutting is no longer an option. Instead, you reach into the grass with your gloved hands to tear up the stalks that have been pulled in.

    With a sedge, maintenance is fine if the plant is never under drought stress. Therefore, water the ornamental grass in summer and winter when the natural rain or snow is not sufficient. Intermediate drying phases are important to prevent waterlogging. Experience has shown that pots should be watered more frequently because the root ball dries out more quickly due to its exposed location.

    Fertilize sedge properly

    In the professional supply of nutrients, you can keep the ball flat. The undemanding plant is content with an initial fertilization in March/April in the form of compost. It is advantageous for growth if the autumn leaves remain as mulch in the bed under trees and shrubs. In the narrowly limited substrate volume of a tub, on the other hand, the supplies are used up within 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Here you fertilize monthly from April to August with a liquid preparation for green plants.

    No explicit winter protection is required in the bed. As a precaution, larger clumps can be loosely tied together with sisal to protect the heart of the plant from permanent winter wetness. Before the first frost, tubs are wrapped in bubble wrap and placed on wood. Continue watering wintergreen grasses as evaporation continues here during the cold season.
