Every hobby gardener is happy about a longer flowering period for their bulbous begonias. They can be brought forward in February and then bloom from April. With the following tips you can enjoy the magnificent flowers earlier and longer on the balcony and in the garden or house.

Getting tuberous begonias out of hibernation

If you want to activate the growth of the tubers early, put them in pots or seed trays from February. Normal potting soil mixed with sand has proven itself as a plant substrate. In addition, add some horn shavings (32.93€) to supply the plants with fertilizer for up to ten weeks.

Plant the tuber no more than three centimeters deep with the dent facing upwards. The shoots will later form on this upper side. Cover air-permeable film or hood. A bright window sill without direct midday sun corresponds to the optimal location.

If you keep them too warm, they will sprout many leaves but hardly form any roots. Therefore wait until the first shoots appear and then increase the temperature from 15 degrees to around 20 degrees.

Prefer tuberous begonias and what next?

With good care, the first leaves will sprout after a few weeks. Now plant the plants, depending on the variety, in buckets, pots, hanging baskets or flower boxes (€16.99). Once the leaves start growing vigorously, they will need a little more water and a spray bottle shower.

Towards the end of April, harden the tuberous begonias outside to a shady spot during the day. From mid-May, when there is no danger of frost, leave the tuberous begonias outside overnight or plant them in beds.

How can female flowers be distinguished from male ones?

Tuber begonias are available with double female flowers as well as single male flowers. Although they can do with little light, they bloom in a wide range of colors from white to orange, yellow, pink to scarlet. To encourage the formation of new flowers, regularly remove the remains of the flowers.
