Cucumbers - one of the most popular types of vegetables - taste refreshing, but have fewer calories and more vitamins and minerals. When growing cucumbers, a distinction is made between outdoor cucumbers and greenhouse cucumbers. So they grow better and form more flowers and fruits.

The right cucumber for every taste

You can choose between a classic long cucumber or a short midi snake cucumber. Generally high-yielding varieties are the F1 hybrids with a long harvest period. Some are also free of bitter substances and resistant to mildew.

  • Bella F 1 - bitter-free cucumber
  • Paska F 1 - midi cucumber, for the balcony or outdoors

In order to get resistant, more robust plants, you can graft cucumbers yourself or buy grafted cucumber plants.

Cucumbers Cultivation in greenhouses and outdoors

Cucumbers only sprout at temperatures above 10°. Underneath, they grow only hesitantly and the harvest is smaller. This is why cucumbers thrive more successfully in greenhouses. Don't forget: before attaching, attach a climbing aid and shade under the roof.

After the ice saints, cucumber plants are allowed outside. Whether in a bed or in a planter, the location should be sheltered from the wind and sunny. Plant the plants about half a meter apart in the prepared bed or planter. Depending on the weather, warmth and care, they quickly spread along the ground or grow upwards indoors. Don't forget the climbing aid. Eating snake cucumbers promotes increased flowering and fruit formation.

Cucumber cultivation on the balcony

You can grow cucumbers on the balcony in a bucket or pot of at least 20 liters. Fill the planter with substrate or potting soil, plant cucumbers, attach to a trellis and place in a wind-protected, sunny location.

Cucumber harvest time

It only takes a good two weeks after flowering before you can harvest the first cucumbers. Don't let them turn yellow or they will be overripe and lose their flavor. Better to harvest a little earlier.

tips and tricks

Cucumbers slip on plant stakes and break off. Especially when ripe fruit weighs down the tendril. Therefore fasten at short distances of 10 centimeters. Or not just vertically, but up and down a trellis.
