Everyone is eagerly awaiting the next potato harvest. Is it productive and will I harvest large tubers? Potatoes need sufficient nutrients to grow. These are supplied in the form of fertilizer.

Fertilizing with manure begins with the preparation of the bed

The cultivation of potatoes begins in autumn. The bed is dug up and the clods remain over the winter. They are covered with manure or mature compost.

The following spring, the remains of manure or compost are incorporated into the soil. Now the soil has a solid foundation of nutrients.

Fertilize during growth

If you want to add fertilizer during growth, you can choose between organic and synthetic fertilizers.

Fertilize potatoes organically

This is always the better way to preserve the flavor of the potatoes. Horn shavings (€32.93) and manure are suitable as organic fertilizers. They are applied directly to the ground.

Synthetic Fertilizers

Suitable synthetic fertilizers should contain nutrients such as magnesium, nitrogen, potassium, phosphates and sulphur.

  • Advantage: very nutritious
  • Disadvantage: falsified aroma, lower shelf life, increased susceptibility to disease, danger of over-fertilization
Before using organic fertilizers, you should have a soil analysis done.

tips and tricks

You can get manure from the farmer or packaged at the hardware store. Compost is provided by the composting plant for a small fee.
