From June to December, the runner beans enchant us with their red, red-white and yellowish inflorescences. The pods, which are up to 25 cm long, taste particularly good when they are harvested as young beans. The sowing of the runner beans takes place from mid-May, even if frost is no longer to be expected at night.

Prefer fire beans indoors
From April you can grow fire beans in the house. You need small flower pots or yoghurt pots with soil in which you place the bean seeds two to three centimeters deep. For faster germination, soak the seeds in water overnight.
The seeds will germinate within a week or two on a warm windowsill. The runner bean is sensitive to moisture, so the seed pot is only kept slightly damp. You can plant the young fire beans outdoors from mid-May.
Sow runner beans directly into the bed
From mid-May you can also sow runner beans directly into the bed:
- Soak bean seeds overnight
- loosen soil
- the soil should be dry and at least 10 degrees Celsius warm for sowing
- Set up climbing aids in the bed
- Sow six to ten seeds 2 to 3 cm deep in a circle around the pole
- cover with soil and water lightly
- a minimum distance between the climbing aids of 40 cm and between the rows of one meter

Sow runner beans in a container for the balcony
If you want to grow runner beans on the balcony, you need a container with a diameter of at least 45 cm. The vessel is filled with simple garden soil, which you enrich with horn shavings (€32.93) or compost. About five to six seeds are placed two to three cm deep in the ground and covered with substrate.
tips and tricks
Runner beans are particularly suitable for climbing on willow tipis. They develop a dense foliage and adorn at the same time with their decorative flowers. But be careful: beans are poisonous and therefore not a sweet vegetable for children.
