Investing in a threshing machine is usually not worthwhile in private kitchen gardens. So the question arises as to how to get hold of the coveted grains after the harvest. The answer lies in a return to old traditions.

Threshing peas with the flail

Not everything that our ancestors developed is antiquated. Threshing peas with simple means is part of it.

  • lay out an old mattress at the threshing floor
  • put the dried pea pods in a sack
  • hitting the sack repeatedly with a flail

Then clean the contents of the sack in a large swing sieve, with the help of the wind. This process of cleaning the peas is to be repeated until the kernels are clean.
