Like all fruit trees, pear trees, which are intended to bear a rich harvest, need sufficient nutrients. With the right fertilization, you ensure that the tree can develop many tasty fruits. Mulching is the ideal fertilization method.

Fertilizing the pear tree after planting

Although the pear tree in the garden needs sufficient nutrients, you must not do too much of a good thing. In particular, fertilizers rich in nitrogen should only be used in moderation.

When planting the pear tree, improve the soil in the planting hole with mature compost or well-rotted stable soil. This fertilization lasts for the first few years.

Make sure that the roots do not come into direct contact with fresh fertilizer material. This can cause you to “burn”.

Fertilizing older pear trees

If the pear tree has grown well, it hardly needs any additional fertilization. In the spring, lightly rake some mature compost or rotted manure into the soil.

Special fruit fertilizers, such as those available in specialist shops, do not necessarily have to be given. If the tree does not bear fruit, there are usually reasons other than a lack of nutrients.

Be careful with fertilizers containing nitrogen. Too much of it causes strong sprouting of branches and prevents the formation of flowers and fruit.

Mulching - the best way to fertilize a pear tree

An ideal fertilization is the mulch cover. The material decomposes, releasing important nutrients into the soil. The cover also prevents weeds from growing.

Chopped wood should not be used as mulch on young trees, as this removes too much nitrogen.

Pest-free leaves are well suited for mulching. Spread the dried leaves out on the tree disc in spring.

Fertilizer tips in brief:

  • Mulch with a mixture of grass clippings, leaves and herbs

In the fall, remove the layer of mulch. Voles like to nest here, which cause lasting damage to young tree roots in particular.

Experienced gardeners sow spinach or mustard on the tree disc of the pear tree in spring. This keeps the weeds away and provides the soil with additional nutrients. Dandelions have also proven themselves as underplanting for pear trees.
