Compared to other trees with a similarly high canopy, apple trees usually develop relatively flat root shoots. This sometimes makes them vulnerable in storms, but it is understandable given the intolerance to waterlogging.

Properly dig the planting hole for an apple tree

Since the apple tree is a flat-rooted tree, the planting hole should be appropriately sized for all apple varieties. Before planting the seedling, a hole should be dug that is not only deeper but also wider than the root ball of the tree. Then the walls of the pit are lined with loose humus to give the new apple tree optimal starting conditions for growth. Even when moving an older apple tree, care must be taken to ensure that the planting hole is adequately dimensioned. If the growth of the shallow root suckers is hindered by a stony substrate, this can lead to corresponding losses in the growth of the apple tree.

Regular watering during dry periods

Due to the shallow root dimension of the apple tree, it can be damaged more easily in long dry periods. Although a healthy tree without significant diseases will survive a Central European summer without artificial irrigation, the drought could severely decimate the possible harvest. You should therefore water the tree extensively every five to eight days during hot dry periods.

When planting near the trunk, pay attention to compatibility

Garden owners often don't just want to leave an apple tree in the meadow, but want to surround it with a round flower bed. This is particularly easy for trees with a high trunk, since the apple tree, despite its flat-rooting properties, only develops a few main roots, leaving room for other plants around the trunk. So-called rambler roses are suitable for climbing, but annual plants such as nasturtium also have their appeal with their protective function against aphids. Other plant species for underplanting would be:

  • columbine
  • ground cover
  • currants

tips and tricks

In order to avoid difficulties during the harvest, the planting around the tree disc should not be extended too far. In addition, large shrubs with deep roots also mean competition for water and nutrients for the tree.
