Not every garden owner gives his freshly planted apple tree a support at first. Due to various tree-specific factors, there are good reasons for tying the apple tree to a wooden stake or other stabilizer.

Transplanting as a critical point in the life of an apple tree
In principle, apple trees should only be planted in autumn if possible. The best time is when all the leaves have fallen but there is no frost outside. During this resting phase, the tree sap circulation is at its lowest level. This means that the chances of growth and survival for the apple tree increase enormously when you move to a new location compared to planting in spring or summer. Apple trees are particularly prone to drying out because their fine hairy roots are very sensitive. Therefore, you should water an apple tree thoroughly during and after planting.
The method of tying to a stake
Usually, for a small to medium-sized seedling, a wooden stake is sufficient to stabilize the trunk. Ideally, this should be hammered into the ground about 15 centimeters deep at the edge of the planting hole before the tree is planted. In this way, you prevent the main roots from being injured by the tip of the post compared to driving in after planting. Also, keep a distance of at least 20 centimeters from the tree trunk so as not to hinder root growth. If necessary, the wooden pole can also be hammered in at an angle in the direction of the apple tree trunk. Then the pole and log are connected with coco rope or other natural binding material by looping the material around both in lying figure eights.
Build a support out of three wooden stakes
For larger trees or in windy areas, it may be advisable to support the apple tree with a triangular construction. For this you need:
- three construction strips as supports and one for cross connections
- a handsaw
- a hammer
- some nails
- Binding material made of soft natural fibers
Using cross connectors, form an even construction with the tree trunk in the middle from the wooden stakes. Then run a simple noose around the log from each wooden stake. With this method, the binding material is not closed around the trunk, so it cannot grow in under any circumstances.
tips and tricks
You should never use wire to tie an apple tree, as it will grow into the bark of the tree.
