Even easy-care plants should not be neglected. If you want to enjoy your mulberry tree for a long time and you want it to bear plenty of fruit, then treat it to a little care, good fertilizer and enough water.

How much water does a mulberry tree need?

The mulberry tree does not like moist soil and waterlogging. Nevertheless, it needs a thorough watering every week. If it is in full sun, it is better to water your mulberry tree twice a week in the hot, dry midsummer to avoid drought damage.

Does a mulberry tree need fertilizer?

Mulberry trees have a high nutrient requirement, especially if they are to bear a lot of fruit. Potted plants should therefore be supplied with complete fertilizer weekly. Well-rotted compost or horn meal is recommended for outdoor mulberry trees. Fertilization in April and June is sufficient here.

What diseases or pests does a mulberry tree suffer from?

Mulberry trees are fairly resistant to pests and diseases. Occasionally, dry damage or spider mites appear, which are easy to treat. Penetrating watering helps against dry damage.

Help with spider mites:

  • Rinse the leaves thoroughly on all sides
  • Obtain lacewings or predatory mites from specialist retailers
  • Use rapeseed oil-based insecticide

Does a mulberry tree need winter care?

An adult mulberry tree does not require any special winter care, but even in winter when temperatures are above freezing it needs sufficient water to prevent it from drying out. That is often forgotten. The black mulberry is not particularly hardy and should only be planted outdoors in a mild climate.

A young mulberry tree can overwinter as a container plant in a cool room. Outdoors, the root ball should be protected by a layer of leaves or straw when the temperature is below zero. The plant is wrapped with fleece.

Do you prune a mulberry tree?

Mulberry trees do not require any special pruning. However, they can be pruned to limit growth or give them a specific shape. If you want to plant your mulberry tree in a bucket or several trees as a hedge, then you cannot avoid a cut.

tips and tricks

The most important care measures for your mulberry tree are regular fertilization and sufficient water. Also check your mulberry tree regularly for pests and drought damage.
