The best location for a mulberry tree

Since mulberry trees can grow quite large, they also require quite a bit of space. Plan about half the final height as the distance to your neighbors or your own house. Incompatibilities with other plants are not known. Mulberry trees like a sunny or partially shaded position.

The best time to plant

The best season for planting a mulberry tree outdoors is autumn. This allows the young tree to take root well before the frost comes. In the first winter, however, winter protection is advisable. If you want to plant your mulberry tree in a bucket, you can do this all year round.

The right soil for a mulberry tree

Mulberry trees need loose, permeable soil because they do not tolerate waterlogging. A drainage made of gravel can possibly help here. They need a lot of nutrients so that they can bear plenty of fruit. A slightly alkaline or pH neutral soil is to their liking.

Planting the mulberry tree

  • dig a planting hole at least twice the size of the root ball of your mulberry tree
  • loosen heavy soil with sand
  • mix horn shavings (€32.93) and compost into the potting soil
  • plant the mulberry tree as deep in the ground as it was in the bucket before
  • drive a support stake next to your mulberry tree and tie your tree to it
  • compact the soil around your mulberry tree, sloping slightly towards the center
  • water your mulberry tree generously

Mulberry trees can be propagated by cuttings. Remove the lower leaves from a piece of green wood about 20 cm long and put it in potting soil or normal garden soil.

The second option is to sow seeds from ripe fruit or purchased seeds in a seed pot in May. The seeds should germinate after about two to five weeks.
