The dream of delicious figs, harvested in your own garden, can also come true in our latitudes. The right location and a suitable substrate are important so that the heat-loving plant feels comfortable and numerous fruits ripen.

A full sun location is ideal

In order for the sun-loving fig to thrive, you need to give it a sheltered location and as much sun as possible. A house wall that stores the heat of the sunlight is ideal and thus prevents the fig from freezing back too far in the winter months. A light-flooded inner courtyard is also well suited, as the figs can thrive here, protected from the wind.

Prefer hardy varieties

Hardy fig varieties that tolerate short-term temperatures of -15 degrees are ideal for the garden. Pay attention to the following points when making your selection:

  • Is the tree offered a real or fake fig? Only real figs produce fruit.
  • How productive is the selected variety?
  • Since the fig wasp does not survive in our latitudes, the tree must be self-fertile.
  • Only plant out hardy and very hardy varieties.

However, it is absolutely necessary to also provide these robust varieties with adequate winter protection outdoors.
