Red bananas are hardly known in Germany, but the exotic fruits are becoming increasingly popular with gourmets. This banana variety not only convinces in taste. Rather, its creamy, soft consistency is seductive.

appearance and origin
This type of banana originally comes from India. Today the following countries are among the main growing areas:

Red bananas (Musa acuminata) are a little smaller than the yellow fruit bananas known in this country. They also have a somewhat angular shape. Their shell is very thick and firm. Even at first glance, these bananas can be distinguished by their reddish-brown colour. In Germany you usually get dark red specimens. However, these are only ripe after a few days, as soon as the skin relaxes a little and becomes darker.
The pulp is characterized by its particularly juicy consistency. It is dark yellow to slightly reddish in color.
Tip:
Bananas are often not eaten in Germany because they are somewhat reminiscent of overripe bananas. Despite the intense price, it is definitely worth trying this exotic fruit.

The intense aroma of the red banana unfolds especially when eaten raw. But it is also very popular as a fried, boiled or baked version. Spicy recipes dominate here. In soups or cakes, they can be wonderfully combined with ginger, red peppers or alternatively with chili peppers.
storage
Red bananas ripen quickly at room temperature. Apples support this process wonderfully at around 15 degrees Celsius. Both fruits are kept in a closed container for this purpose. In no case is the refrigerator suitable for storage.
If the ends of the banana show signs of rotting, you can cut them off. The interfaces dry up again by themselves. The pulp does not become infected.
